How good is your sense of smell? In fact, perception of scent is directly linked to the brain’s memory circuits in the hippocampus, while all other sensory information is relayed through the thalamus. You may have noticed that smells can bring to mind memories from the past, more quickly than anything else. Scientists recently tested the idea that regularly using different essential oils may improve our memory, with fascinating results. They recruited a group of over 60’s, and gave half of them a selection of essential oils including eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint, lavender, orange, rose, and rosemary. They were to choose a different oil each night and diffuse it for 2 hours while sleeping, and continue this for 6 months. Memory, learning and attention tests, showed a 226% better performance compared with controls who didn’t use the oils. Reported in the journal Frontiers of Neuroscience July 2023. In many people decreasing concentration and memory is experienced with age, and after illness. Perhaps this may be an easy way to improve it?
