Is it Food Allergy or Food Intolerance?

Food allergy occurs when the immune system reacts immediately to foods that are harmless to other people.
Symptoms of food allergy can be things like hives, eczema, asthma or life threatening anaphylaxis. 
The most common food allergens are wheat, milk, eggs, sesame seeds, fish & shellfish, soy,
peanuts & tree nuts.
Food Intolerance is not the same as food allergy but does cause very unpleasant symptoms like those shown below.
The symptoms of Food intolerance are often delayed  and can occur hours to days after eating the suspect food.

What causes Food Intolerance?

Symptoms of Food Intolerance often start after something changes in your life. See if you recognise any of the following: 
If you have not felt well since your last overseas trip, a bacterial or parasitic infection you picked up in the food can disorder your digestion for months or years, even after the infection itself has gone. This is because of the damage these organisms do to the gut wall and the normal gut flora necessary for good digestion, absorption and continued gut health.

Do you have a stressful work or home life? Stress and Anxiety particularly if prolonged, can adversely affect your gut flora, reduce blood flow to your digestive organs, and as a result disrupt your digestion significantly. Emotional eating can result in an intake of too much sugar and refined carbs like bread, pasta, potatoes and pastries which encourage the growth of Candida in the gut.
This is a highly inflammatory yeast type of organism which causes leaky gut and can also be responsible for thrush in women.
  
Repeated antibiotic use destroys good gut flora and this allows the bad ones to move in and create havoc. There is some research that indicates repeated antibiotic use may be linked to the dramatic rise in celiac disease in western countries.

Gluten and Dairy are two common foods which can inflame the gut lining and cause 'Leaky Gut' in susceptible individuals.
