A recent study of 20,000 people over 60 years of age, was published in the journal ‘Circulation’ which looked at how many steps a day we need to reduce the risk of heart disease. The researchers found that people who walked between 6,000 – 9,000 steps daily almost halved their risk of heart attacks and strokes. Exercise also brings other benefits, it can lower insulin resistance & blood sugar, improve energy and mood, help you tone up and reduce body fat - along with a healthy diet of course, improve your sleep, and it can even stimulate growth of new brain cells. So how long does your daily walk need to be to kickstart all these benefits? Well, during a brisk walk, you take about 1,000 steps every 10 minutes, so in an hour you would take about 6,000 steps.
