Vitamin D promotes Calcium absorption in the small intestine, and thereby supports bone mineralisation and strength. An analysis published October 28th 2015 by the National Osteoporosis foundation in America, compared 7 studies of over 30,000 elderly people to see how supplementation with approximately 1,000 mg of Calcium and 800 IU of Vitamin D affected the risk of hip fracture over a period of up to 7 years. They found a 30% reduction in hip fracture in those who supplemented compared with those who did not. The Australian recommended intake of calcium from all sources for people over 50 years is 1,200mg daily. Supplementation is especially important for those who have a dairy intolerance.
