In 2013, scientist Steve Horvath published a paper about a ‘biological age clock’ that used methylation changes to DNA in the cell, to indicate the cell's age. As the age on the clock increases, it predicts a fall in the health and function of the cells, and eventually a higher risk of disease and death.
Studies have shown that various factors like diet, exercise, and lifestyle stress levels can affect ageing shown on your biological clock. A study observing data from 4,575 people found that eating fish, plenty of fruit and veggies, and exercising daily, were linked to slower biological ageing. In another group of 219 healthy, postmenopausal women, researchers found that after 2 years of following a diet high in plant foods (fruit, veggies, nuts etc.) their biological age change was 0.66 years less, compared to the controls who did not follow this way of eating.
These simple changes to diet and lifestyle are easily implemented, and of course minimizing processed packaged foods containing refined grains, artificial colors and flavors, and lots of sugar is another obvious help to the health of your cells.
In our clinic we also consider the foods that may be triggering inflammation in your body, and assist you in identifying and removing these.
