Osteoporosis is a major health concern for women after menopause. In addition to weight bearing exercise and adequate dietary calcium there is a new player in the field of prevention. The American journal of Clinical Nutrition in September 2015, reported a study of 2,806 women over 50 years of age, which found that women with high Homocysteine levels in their blood also had high incidence of osteoporosis as shown by Bone Mineral Density X-Ray of the lumbar spine. Women with normal Bone Mineral Density had lower Homocysteine levels. Elevated Homocysteine is also associated with increased heart disease risk. Homocysteine can be normalised by supplementation with the methylating nutrients Vitamins B6, B12 and Folate.
