The Mediterranean diet is high in vegetables, fruit, nuts, fish, and plenty of extra virgin olive oil; it is very low in sugar and processed food. A trial reported in September 2015 in JAMA Internal Medicine followed 4,282 women older than 60 for almost 5 years. Participants were given either a Mediterranean diet with extra virgin olive oil, or a control diet and it was found that those on the Mediterranean diet had 67% less incidence of breast cancer than those not following this healthy way of eating.
