Research published in New Scientist magazine
on 1 May 2013 shows what happened when
26 volunteers had their gene profile analysed by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, and were then taught a 20 minute meditation practice using the breath and a mantra
After 8 weeks of daily practice their gene profile was again analysed. Researchers found enhanced expression of genes associated with mitochondrial energy production, (giving people more energy) insulin secretion, and telomere maintenance (telomeres determine how long we live). They also found reduced expression of genes associated with the inflammation response (NF-Kappa B pathway genes) meaning people had lower levels of inflammation which causes pain, tissue damage, and fatigue.
This is good news for practicing something so simple.
