Your large intestinal membrane is covered in a layer of mucus whose job is to strengthen the gut barrier and prevent harmful substances from leaking into the blood stream. A specialized bacterial population called Akkermansia muciniphila live in the outer part of this mucus layer, & the inner part stops pathogenic microbes & their bi-products (LPS) causing inflammation to the gut wall, and leaky gut.
Akkermansia stimulates turnover of the mucus layer by digesting some of the mucins and turning them into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including acetate & butyrate which are essential food for the cells lining your gut. Scientists tell us that Akkermansia population is lower in kids who have had multiple antibiotic doses, & those with irritable bowel disease (Chron’s & ulcerative colitis), obesity, type II diabetes, and leaky gut. It also appears to modulate host immune responses.
By including foods in our diet that have been found to increase Akkermansia we may stimulate restoration of the mucus layer and thus improve gut barrier function.
