What causes Reflux or GERD? The ads would have you believe it’s caused by too much stomach acid, but that’s not what science tells us. Prevailing scientific theory says it’s the result of a malfunction in the little valve between the stomach, and the oesophagus. When due to stress, ageing, or poor food choices, stomach acid levels fall too low bacteria can grow in the stomach and intestines causing bloating, along with inflammation and polyps. The inflammation and extra pressure on the valve causes it to leak burning acid into the oesophagus. Microbiologist Dr Norm Robillard in his book “Heartburn cured” suggests that malabsorption of carbs occurs along with bacterial overgrowth, and therefore a diet lowering carbohydrate intake must be part of the solution. In our society where people routinely overeat carbs like bread, pasta, sugar, potatoes, biscuits or cakes, a change in diet may be a very healthy option.
